The "Red Hat ParTEA Dolls" ("ParTEA Dolls" for short) is an officially registered chapter
of the Red Hat Society. The Red Hat Society is a dis-organization of ladies who gather for the
sole purpose of having fun. There are no business meetings, no rules, just friendship and fun. Ladies
who are 50+ wear purple outfits and a red hat to all their events, and those ladies-in-waiting under 50
wear lavender outfits with pink hats until their 50th birthday when there is a "RED-uation"
celebration for them!
The Red Hat Society began in California with Sue Ellen Cooper giving a red hat to a friend (who was turning 50), along with a copy of the poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph which begins "When I am 50 I shall wear purple, with a red hat..." In only 6 years the Red Hat Society has grown to over 60,000 chapters worldwide! The one who registers the chapter with the Red Hat Society names the chapter and is the "Queen Mother". In our case the Queen Mother is Martha Plunkett, who founded the ParTEA Dolls in the summer of 2002. It all began with a brunch at her house in Manassas VA, with 13 attending. Now the ParTEA Dolls number nearly 50! Many chapters have Vice Queens, who help the Queen with planning events. The ParTEA Dolls have three, known as the "Queen's Court". They are Fran Rowell, Pat Bemis and Holly Shelton. They meet with Queen Martha for planning sessions for upcoming events. There was a fun Coronation Tea for the installation of Queen Martha and the Queen's Court, where they vowed (among many silly things) to "Keep the Queen Happy"! Keeping with our name, we also have a doll mascot named Emilee, who attends most events, dressed appropriately in red and purple! Recently other chapter members have purchased "sisters" for Emilee and now there are six of them! We try to dress them all alike, so we are always looking for doll outfits! Some of our fun events include parties (holidays or any excuse), teas, movies, dinner theater, shopping and most always include eating. We enjoy playing bunco each month and someone always brings a dish that everyone wants the recipe for, and that is why we planned this ParTEA Doll cookbook! We started the tradition of "Ghoul's Nite Out" for Halloween, when we don our red witch's hat and go to a restaurant for dinner and a haunted hayride or scary ghost tour. The Blarney Blast for St. Patrick's Day has been an annual event for us, with an Irish Dancer and/or Barbershop quartet to entertain us while enjoying green salads and desserts with an Irish coffee bar. We've had annual pool parties with pirate, cruise and luau themes. We were entertained by hula dancers, a belly dancer, a country singer and surprised by pirates. Our "Wacky Tacky" party was, well, tacky - and one was crowned Ms. Tacky, and given a bouquet of, well, dead flowers! Our Western murder mystery and Bumped Off at the Beauty shop mystery have been hits. Special highlights for us include our Christmas tea at the beautiful Willard Hotel in Washington DC, via limo, our Valentine's Day Brunch at Westfields and our Elvis Birthday Tribute! |
